In this report we present international benchmarks for person-to-person (PTP) SMS and MMS pricing and analyse different pricing strategies adopted by operators in respect of these services across consumer markets. The current pricing benchmarks are compared to those produced by Mobile Market Development in the autumn of 2003, with the aim of highlighting trends in pricing levels and evolution of service offers.
For both SMS & MMS we examine the experience in 26 markets. We highlight the most commonly used pricing structures and many other unique approaches to service pricing. We also:
- Compare SMS/MMS price benchmarks from 26 operators in 20 countries.
- Highlight the level of SMS/MMS service price erosion over the last 12 months.
- Reveal instances were SMS prices have dropped by up to 41% in more mature SMS markets.
- Examine the range of innovative SMS/MMS and multimedia service bundles and promotions developed by operators in their efforts to retain/develop higher value messaging customers
- Detail segment specific offers targeting higher volume messaging users
- Examine how operators are pricing, promoting and explaining various sized MMS messages as service familiarity and MMS/video messaging capable, handset penetration grows.
