Aside from SMS, voicemail is often quoted by operators as the most successful value added service, in terms of generating additional revenue. This revenue is not the result of any charges directly associated with voicemail, but the result of the charges for the additional calls that are made as a result of having voicemail. These are the additional calls to voicemail boxes to retrieve messages and return calls to those leaving messages.
The level of revenue generated from voicemail services can vary significantly across different operators depending on the level of voicemail penetration across the customer base and the call return rate among customers using the service.
