The success of PTP SMS has inspired operators and other players in the market to seek new ways to maximise revenues from SMS based applications. During the last 2-3 years there has been a proliferation of initiatives related to the provision of SMS based applications. These have included:
- Premium Rate SMS, such as ring-tones, logos, interactive TV programs, competitions, games, text-alerts, information, etc.
- A Range of SMS services (e.g. SMS Chat, Dating, e-mail services, group messaging, etc.) which offer additional scope to generate revenue either through premium rate charges or simply through a wider range of new applications where standard PTP charges apply. Operators have the discretion here as to whether they wish to charge a premium for these applications.
A considerable proportion of application generated SMS is accounted for by premium rate services (ring-tones, logos, interactive TV programs, etc.) although, over the last year or so there has also been a significant increase in the level of traffic generated by applications such as SMS Chat, SMS Dating and group messaging which may not incur a premium. The rates charged for SMS Chat, or similar applications, are generally the same as those that normally apply for standard PTP text messages, although a small premium normally applies when the chat room is initially set up.
